Sponsored by Arts Council England Project Grants.
AVALANCHE is our biggest and bravest project to date, our first full-length show, making it a significant moment in our company trajectory.
We completed a 4 week of R&D collaboration with experienced theatre makers to directly inform the creative evolution of the show.
We undertook 4 weeks of Research & Development on our latest work – AVALANCHE – a story about body image, sport, masculinity and queer sexual assault, based on real lived experience.
Alongside the development of the script, we employed 12 new artists, from sound and video design to choreographer to dramaturgical support.
This activity directly informs the creative evolution of the show, allowing us to refine artistic ideas and shape the next stage of its development, whilst generating the funding and partnerships necessary to do so.
Avalanche is a story based on Fraser's lived experience of sexual assault. It will blend text, movement and sound to create a piece that shines a light on a section of the invisible gay community – people who find themselves in vulnerable and dangerous situations, due to social pressures of masculinity. The finished production will inspire queer audiences and present a part of their experience that isn’t often talked about or presented on stage/screen.
The development of this project is primarily for those with lived experience of sexual assault, body issues, mental health struggle, as well as queer identifying people, who are currently underrepresented in the arts. R&D enables vital dialogue and informs how we reach and engage w/ this audience more effectively in the future.
It appeals more widely to anyone w/ a political interest on masculinity, identity and mental health struggle; the themes enable a chance to introduce non- familiar audiences to important subject matters, whilst maintaining appeal for overall target audiences, incl. those interested in multi-disciplinary work.

This is a short, edited movement sequence choreographed by Nadia Sohawon during the R&D process of Avalanche in October 2021. The piece resembles the intimacy between two friends but also the differences that they have when growing up. One resembles Ice, rigid and painful whereas the other represents snow, moving more freely and with ease. The sound designer Tom Foskett-Barnes composed the music for the video. He was influenced by the scripts language and the environment that the play was set
